TURNING LIABILITIES INTO ASSETS TOUR
Returning Citizen, author and entrepreneur Richard Gaines shares, "How We're Reclaiming Our Lives & Our Stories One Page at A Time". About this event Join Returning Citizens Association and Capital Gaines for an in-depth conversation about Turning Liabilities into Assets and creating freedoms by reclaiming our lives through storytelling, books and magazines. On this leg of the Turning Liabilities into Assets Tour we are focusing on the heritage of literature—storytelling— celebrating Reclaiming Our Lives, One Story at A Time. These stories provide a human face to individuals in our communities who have been ignored, stigmatized as criminals, and cast aside by society. We're asking our community to make a commitment to help us create a digital and print magazine, accessible to everyone.

Who will write the stories? The majority of the authors are past and present incarcerated men and women who have all survived and continue to fight with the continual obstacles of being Black, Brown, and disenfranchised. Race, class, location, family, mental and physical health, gender, disability, and identity are all addressed in these stories. They are, above all, stories about life, loss, and the will to succeed. You will have some questions, and we'll have answers. The panel discussion is designed to bring to light some of the major challenges in the criminal justice system. Dignified thought leaders from the social justice and reentry sectors who are working toward improved outcomes for justice-involved people in California. They will share with you and answer questions about the importance of individuals authoring their own stories. If you're interested in talking about how to create, build and support life-changing transformations, come join us for a couple of hours of real talk. Enjoy some refreshments, visit the resource tables and let's create something amazing! Books written and published by Ricky Gaines will be available to the community for a small donation. Community resources and organizations will be in the room. Thank you to our sponsors - Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency, No More Tears & Bonafide.
